Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone our bodies use to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. While the cause of diabetes is unknown, it appears that both genetics and environmental factors (such as obesity and lack of exercise) play roles.

What do I need to think about for my child’s IEP?
When the student is found to be eligible for special education, they can also receive related services to support the child and help them access and take advantage of the special education services. Two of these may include medical services and school health or school nurse services. What services each student needs is determined by the Individualized Education Program of which the parent or caregiver is a vital part. This means parents and educators work together to make an educational plan that provides supports, services, accommodations and modifications that are individualized for student.
